Manufacturing Process Engineer

Responsibilities:

The Process Engineer will join the operations team and focus on developing and maintaining robust manufacturing processes in our West Coast facility. Responsibilities include:

  • Own the high level manufacturing processes, or subsets of the manufacturing processes, for the West Coast Facility, including procedures, production yields, and throughput.
  • Develop a high level of competency in key manufacturing steps and participate in product delivery – part of this role will be very hands on!
  • In collaboration with development engineering, drive design for manufacturability
  • In collaboration with the manufacturing and development teams, drive improvements in manufacturing throughput and cost
  • In collaboration with the overall manufacturing team, drive new product introductions to successful launch status

This position will report to the Director of Manufacturing and Supply Chain.

Qualifications:

Minimum BSc degree in Optical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. 10+ years experience in relevant semiconductor, opto-electronics, opto-mechanical, fiber optics, optics or engineering field, encompassing process engineering, new product development and manufacturing engineering. Experience with fiber based telecom products is highly desirable.

Leadership Skills:

The candidate will lead the manufacturing team through the technical hurdles of process development and product evolution. A high degree of collaboration with the development engineering and manufacturing teams will be required. Additionally, the candidate will be required to develop strategic roadmaps for process evolution to meet volume and cost targets. Rigorous adherence to the principles of disciplined product launch and design control are required. The candidate must be proactive, systemic and have strong influence skills.

Management Skills:

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be adept at documentation. Extreme discipline to change control and safety are necessary elements of the day to day role. May eventually have supervisory responsibility.

Functional Mastery:

Functional mastery of assembly processes involving optics, electronic and/or mechanical components and modules will be a key part of this role. As a start-up, our products are in the early stage of New Product Introduction, requiring the candidate to utilize and in some cases develop NPI tools and methods. Additionally, problem solving using disciplined approaches (e.g. 8-D, DOE) will be necessary as we launch and then evolve our products through their lifecycles. As a manufacturing team, we will embrace Lean principles and the candidate must have relevant experience in this area. Demonstrated engineering skills and results in the following areas are required:

  • Design for Manufacturability and Cost
  • Mechanical design relevant to system packaging and integration
  • Lasers and opto-electronic components and systems
  • Telecom components and modules, especially lasers, amplifiers and fiber optics
  • Experience with software programming and interfaces, including programming tools like LabView and databases
  • Process development for assembly and integration operations
  • Development of jigs, fixtures, tests and material flow
  • Yield and cycle time improvement activity
  • Technical problem solving
