Petaluma, CA
The Fiber Optics Engineer is a member of a small technical team developing and
commercializing the next generation of ultra-short pulse laser systems.
Responsibilities:
- Specify, design, and test fiber optic components and subsystems for ultra-short pulse amplification and beam delivery.
- Conduct guided wave propagation analysis of dispersive, nonlinear optical systems.
- Resolve mode-matching, fusion-splicing, assembly, and metrology challenges on the production line.
- Interface with electrical, mechanical, laser, software, and application engineers to solve interdisciplinary problems.
Qualifications:
Minimum BS degree (advanced degree preferred) and 5+ years of experience in fiber-optic design, assembly, and testing. Experience required in all aspects of product life cycle from the exploratory stage through moderate volume production.
Leadership Skills:
This person will work closely with other engineers and laboratory technicians, and will interact with the marketing organization and prospective customers. Innovative problem solving, collaborative learning, and educating teammates about potential optical fiber solutions are key elements of success in the position.
Management Skills:
The Fiber Optics Engineer must have the ability to manage a technical project from concept through manufacturing release. Vital capabilities include influencing and coordinating the work of other engineers, technologists, and technicians to deliver reliably functioning solutions in a cost effective and timely manner.
Functional Mastery:
The following skill set is required, though one or more skills may be developed on-the-job.
- Knowledge of fiber-optic and optoelectronic components such as mode converters, erbium and ytterbium fiber amplifiers, isolators and circulators, spectral amplitude and phase filters, couplers, light sources, and detectors.
- Passive and active waveguide design including integrated optics simulation in Matlab or similar software.
- Practical understanding of high order mode propagation and control.
- Fiber optic component testing using light wave test equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, wavemeters, and autocorrelators.
- Polarization state and PMD measurements, and polarization control design skill in fiber systems.
- Hands-on experience with fusion splicing, high precision optical assembly processes, and related materials.
