Field Applications Engineer
South/Central US
The Field Applications Engineer position is part of a fast-growing and high visibility team supporting the development of applications based on the Raydiance ultrashort pulsed laser platform. This field-based position provides engineering and technical support of customer site experimentation and development of application projects. This FAE position reports to the Principal Applications Engineer and is based in the South Central region of the US. Significant travel (60%) is anticipated.
Responsibilities:
- Design, construct, specify, install, debug and procure materials for laser-based experimental test beds for USP laser applications development projects at customer and developer partner sites
- Perform both independent and collaborative experimental work at customer and developer partner sites
- Document, organize and report on field applications development projects
- Work with customers in the field, on the telephone, and through electronic/remote means
- Interface with electrical, mechanical, laser, software and applications engineers to solve interdisciplinary problems.
Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with optics, optical systems and Class IV lasers – experience with USP laser is a plus
- Minimum B.S. degree in a engineering, physics or related technical field
- 5 to 10 years of experience in the laser industry.
- Solid organizational, communication, and technical writing skills.
- Expertise in customer service and face to face customer interactions.
- Ability to perform basic electronics tasks, such as debugging
Leadership Skills:
Creativity in providing direction for the design and execution of laser and optical experiments; ability to suggest new directions within a particular development project. Should be able to motivate a wide range of external and internal team members from many disciplines as this position is a high visibility node between Raydiance customers (technical and non-technical), sales, marketing, business development, R&D and applications engineering internal team.
Management Skills:
- Ability to organize materials, tools and equipment to complete or assist customer on-site projects.
- Ability to manage timelines, planning and scheduling of travel and expenses.
- Ability to work on projects with limited supervision.
Functional Mastery:
The following skill set is required, though one or more skills may be developed on-the-job.
- Competence in practical laboratory skills
- Intermediate skill designing and assembling in optical and optomechanical systems
- Knowledge of ultra-short pulse laser system theory and operation.
- Fiber optic component and system testing using light wave test equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, wave meters, power/energy meters and autocorrelators.
- Good organizational, communication, and writing skills, including basic data recording, lab notebook and record-keeping, and scientific data presentation skills
- Electronic test and measurement equipment
Additional desired skills include one or more of the following:
optical characterization methods, working knowledge of application programming interface languages (such as National Instruments LabView), non-linear optics, microscopy, imaging techniques, and physics of laser or light interaction with materials.
